2010 Directions in Engine-Efficiency and Emissions Research (DEER) ConferenceThe 16th Directions in Engine-Efficiency and Emissions Research (DEER) Conference will be held on September 27-30, 2010, in Detroit, Michigan. For more than a decade, the DEER Conference has been the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) primary mechanism for the public exchange of state-of-the-art advanced combustion engine research and development (R&D).

DEER brings together professionals in the engine community including engineers, scientists, academics, State and regional regulators, environmental researchers and nonprofit organizations. At DEER 2010, DOE will showcase its cooperatively funded R&D with its partners, national laboratories, the Nation’s automotive transportation industry, universities, and other national and international organizations. DEER fosters the exchange of information and best practices through presentations and posters from new and on-going engine R&D and networking with industry colleagues. The exhibit hall features more than 50 companies showcasing the latest innovations, products, and services. You’ll be able to get hands-on experience with new technology and speak with experts from the leading companies in the industry.

Symposium “Research Opportunities in Electrochemical Energy Storage”, May 3-4, 2010, Argonne, IL

The symposium Research Opportunities in Electrochemical Energy Storage Beyond Lithium Ion: Computational Perspectives will be hosted on May 3-4, 2010, by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory. The purpose of the symposium is to discuss advanced battery technologies for transportation, electronics and renewable energy applications.

The next generation of high-performance battery technologies is likely to greatly exceed the storage capacity limitations associated with existing lithium-ion batteries. They could potentially store as much energy as a tank of gasoline and have a capacity for energy storage that is five to 10 times greater than that of Li-ion batteries. However, technical challenges must be overcome to realize the promise of Lithium-air, or Li-air, battery technologies.

Scientists from industry, academia and national laboratories will discuss these challenges during the symposium and how computational science and engineering will complement laboratory research to help resolve them, accelerate the pace of technology development and improve the safety and stability of advanced energy storage technologies beyond Li-ion.

Symposium speakers and topics include:

  • Dr. Khalil Amine, Argonne National Laboratory, “Advances in Safe, High-Energy Lithium Batteries”
  • Prof. John Newman, University of California, Berkeley, “Modeling Next-Generation Lithium Batteries”
  • Dr. Alan Gara, IBM Watson Research Laboratory, “Exascale Computing as an Opportunity for Predictive Battery Simulation”
  • Dr. Alessandro Curioni, IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, “Fundamental Lithium-Air Cathode Reaction Mechanisms”
  • Dr. Jens Hummelshøj, TU-Denmark, “Oxygen Electrode Reactions in the Lithium-Air Battery”

“2010 doesn’t even resemble 2008 with the addition of plug-in hybrid electric, fuel cell, dedicated CNG, hydraulic hybrids and a rapidly expanding marketplace for all alternative fuels. In the history of transportation, the only thing that comes close to this level of change is the transition 100 years ago from the horse and buggy to the internal combustion engine,” said Annalloyd Thomason, Executive Director of AFVi.

Included in the Recovery Act are $300 million for education and vehicle acquisition through the U.S. Department of Energy Clean Cities program; $300 million through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the purchase of medium- and heavy-duty trucks that reduce diesel emissions; and, $300 million for federal fleets to purchase new vehicles. Another $700 million is available to states and local governments and $17.1 billion for public transit, both of which will stimulate vehicle purchases. Additional funding includes research and development for batteries, vehicle charging infrastructure and biofuels.
